About this tool
OCR (optical character recognition) turns the letters in an image into text. It's useful for converting a photo of a document, a screenshot, or a scanned PDF into text.
It runs on the open-source Tesseract engine, which works inside your browser. The first time, it downloads the recognizer (about 10 MB) and then keeps it saved, so it can work offline.
Accuracy depends on the image: printed, straight, sharp text comes out well; crooked, blurry, or poorly lit photos and handwriting can have errors. Always check the result. For PDFs, up to 50 pages are read.
