A WhatsApp voice note you want to keep, edit or email is often a problem: the file won't open in many players or programs. The reason is the format. Here's how to fix it.
Why it won't open
WhatsApp saves voice notes in OPUS format inside an OGG container (extension .opus or .ogg). It's very efficient for voice, but many editing programs and older players don't recognize it. Converting it to MP3 makes it compatible with almost everything.
Step 1: get the audio out of WhatsApp
Press and hold the voice message and choose the share or forward option. The easiest way is to send it to your email or save it to the Files app on your phone. Then download it on the device where you'll be working.
Step 2: convert it to MP3
Open the WhatsApp audio to MP3 tool, drag in the file, choose 128 kbps (enough for voice) and download the MP3. The conversion happens in your browser and the audio is not uploaded to the internet, which matters because voice notes often contain personal information.
Step 3: trim what you need
If you only want one part, use Trim audio: mark the start and end on the waveform, listen to the selection and download the clip.
If it doesn't work
- Try Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Some browsers, like Safari, may not open certain
.opusfiles. - Check the extension. If the file came as
.opus,.oggor.oga, it should work. If it came with a different extension, try the general audio to MP3 tool. - Very long audio. A note several minutes long processes fine, but a recording of several hours can run a phone out of memory; use a computer.
A privacy tip
Before sharing a voice note, listen to the whole thing and trim anything you don't want others to hear. A recording can include names, addresses or details you hadn't meant to send.
